School Closure Week #5

Dear Parents,
 This Wednesday, April 22, 2020, is Earth Day. 
Although we know that every day should be Earth Day!

Week 5 cards are posted in the Learn From Home 2020-RF Workspace. This week the students will be focusing on environmental protection by investigation and researching pollinators and pollinator plants. Please be reminded, students are encouraged to explore links on this class blog and on the student portal. 

On Friday, April 24, 2020, at 11:00 am our class will have a Google Meet (video chat). I will email the students the link for the Meet on Friday morning. The discussion topic for the Meet: pollinator plant poster.

Happy Easter! 

I hope everyone was able to celebrate in some, way the resurrection of Jesus.

Week 4 cards are posted in the Learn From Home 2020-RF Workspace. This week the students will be focusing on adding /subtracting money amounts and writing a friendly letter to themselves. Please be reminded, students are encouraged to explore links on this class blog and on the student portal on our school's website.

On Friday, April 17, 2020, at 11:00 am our class will have a Google Meet (video chat). Check your emails for the link to join the Meet! The discussion question: What are three things you can't wait to do when this is over?

School Closure Week #2

Dear Parents,

Thank you for filling in the Google Form I sent out last week. If you haven't had the chance to fill it in yet, please do. This will help, me to support you during the school closure.

Please be reminded all school work that will be assigned to students can be found on our class' Learn From Home 2020-RF Workspace, in the Student Portal.  I've included a screencastify video for parents: Virtual Tour of a Workspace.

In addition to completing the work found in the Workspace, students are also more than welcome to explore the links and tabs on this Class Blog and on the Student Portal.

School Closure Week #1

Dear Grade 3 Parents,

Please take a few minutes to complete the Google Form I emailed to your personal email addresses. This will really help me to best support families during school closure.

Due to the extension of the school closures announced by the Minister of Education earlier this week, and the importance of having your child continue to work on their learning, I've decided to assign work to students through a Hapara Workspace.  The students have used a Workspace in class before, so they'll feel familiar with its format.
The workspace can be found in the Student Portal on the School's website http://mrt.ocsb.ca/. Just look for this icon below:



Have your child search for the workspace entitled: Gr. 3 Learn From Home 2020-RF. The Workspace is organized in weeks and focuses on language, math, religion, science and staying connected!

 Points to Consider:

• Set a routine (not too rigid), this will reduce stress and promote independence skills. 
• With regular practice, children develop fluency in reading and writing. 
• Critical thinking, problem-solving, reasoning ability and the ability to communicate mathematically are essential skills for successful learners. 
• Social-emotional learning increases positive attitudes, social behaviour, and academic performance. Encouraged your child to connect with their classmates in the Workspace's staying connected section.

Happy Spring!
I've emailed all the students' (board email) to check-in to see how everyone is doing!

Before the break, I updated my class blog with information and ideas of how you can continue to work on your math, reading and writing skills while at home. So explore my last post on this blog. Lastly, the Ontario Government has a website entitled Learn at Home with other great games, activities, etc. check out that website: Learn at Home

Three Week School Closure

Dear Parents, 

I'm sure you are all aware that all publicly funded school closure in Ontario for two weeks following March Break, in response to the emergence in Ontario of COVID-19. As a result, all schools in the Ottawa Catholic School Board will be closed from March 14 to April 5, 2020.

For the two weeks after March Break students are asked to continue working on their reading, writing, and mathematic skills. They can do so through the following websites (found on the right-side panel of this blog):

Prodigy: http://www.prodigygame.com (assignments: money, time, EQAO test prep.)

Zorbits Math Adventure: .https://zorbitsmath.com/

To help practise writing, the students are encouraged to write me a letter about their March Break adventures; as I will be writing to each of them. 

**There are also many educational apps that students have access to our school's website  (http://mrt.ocsb.ca/our-school) through their student portal.


Students can also work on Our Lenten Project - completing good deeds at home for $2

We are supporting the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund, which works to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities together through awareness, education and connections between all Canadians. Throughout the Lenten season, we will be collecting donations for the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund. Students are welcome to:

*Collect donations of $2 in exchange for doing good deeds or chores at home
*Contribute a $2 donation in exchange for being able to paint a piece of our Reconciliation mural which will be displayed in our school

These donations can be contributed through School Cash Online! We look forward to supporting this organization through our Lenten Project this year and we will be extending our collections to after Easter due to the school closures. We thank you for your ongoing support.
